GOVERNMENT

The City of Commerce is a Home Rule municipality with a council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of the mayor and four council members, elected at-large and serving two-year staggered terms. The City has a Planning & Zoning Board, a Master Plan, and completed a ten-year Strategic Plan in 2004.

Commerce employs 18 municipal police plus seven reserve officers. In addition, Texas A&M-Commerce has its own police department; the two organizations work in partnership. The fire department has 13 paid firemen and 17 volunteer fire fighters.

Established in 1889, A&M-Commerce is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the state and is leading producer of highly qualified teachers. Continuing that reputation of excellence, the university offers over 100 academic majors ranging from agricultural science, art, business, journalism, math, music, photography and science to industrial engineering, computer science, new media, athletic training and educational psychology.
