LOCATION
Home of Texas A&M University-Commerce, the community is located in Hunt County, 65 miles northeast of Dallas off 1-30 and 125 miles west of Texarkana. As the Gateway to Texas Lake Country, Commerce is less than 15 minutes from Cooper Lake, which offers fishing, camping, boating, and water skiing.
GOVERNMENT
The City of Commerce is a Home Rule municipality with a council-manager form of government. The City Council consists of the mayor and four council members, elected at-large and serving two-year staggered terms. The City has a Planning & Zoning Board, a Master Plan, and completed a ten-year Strategic Plan in 2004.
Commerce employs 18 municipal police plus seven reserve officers. In addition, Texas A&M-Commerce has its own police department; the two organizations work in partnership. The fire department has 13 paid firemen and 17 volunteer fire fighters.

Established in 1889, A&M-Commerce is one of the premier institutions of higher education in the state and is leading producer of highly qualified teachers. The new $28-million Science and Technology Center will help the university become a leading scientific presence in the region.
